Filetto and Fornoli |
|
| |
Villafranca
territory comprises both hills and a plain, where the town is
located. This area abounds with historical villages, scattered
over a beautiful, green countryside. The whole area, as the rest
of the Val di Magra, is of great interest for the tourist interested
in nature and art. Along with from Filetto and Fornoli, Bagnone
as well is worth a visit for its peculiar structure and for the
castles nearby.

Filetto
It was founded in Byzantine times; its corner towers are still
standing and its well square hosts a number of summer events.
In old times the forest of Filetto was considered a holy place,
where pagan gods were worshipped; nowadays, in August, a huge
feast celebrates San Genesio.

Fornoli
It is the first village going up the valley. The church of
Santa Maria di Groppofosco, also called Chiesaccia, is worth a
visit; its first structure dates from Roman times. Next to the
church, an old farm is what remains of an old hostel, that once
served one of the main crossing on the river.
