Sarzana |
|
| |
A
number of cultural activities take place in Val di Magra's main
town Sarzana, which is suitable for any kind of tourism
one can think of. Sarzana itself is rich in historical monuments
and not far from it there are famous beaches and bays; finally,
on the mountains surrounding the town, a number of hikes and climbs
can satisfy the most experienced mountain lover. The city center
retains its medieval structure characterised by narrow winding
roads; the town is full of craftsman shops, bookshops and, above
all, antiquarian shops.

As
far as cultural resources are concerned, there is the embarrassment
of choice: among many interesting monuments, the Cattedrale dell'Assunta
(XIII century) is a remarkable example of transition between the
Gothic and the Renaissance style; is also interesting the Chiesa
di Sant'Andrea, dating from the end of X century. The Fortezza
di Sarzanello is also well worth a visit; it is a stronghold built
in the course of XIV century by Castruccio Castracani.

Other
monuments as well deserves a visit: the Porta Romana, the Town
Hall, the Magni Griffi palace, Neri palace, the Chiesa del Carmine
and the Firmafede fortress. Those with an interest in antiques
shouldn't miss the Mostra Nazionale dell'Antiquariato (National
Antiquarian Exhibition) or the so- called Soffitta nella Strada
("the Attic on the Road"): during this latter, hundreds
of stands open on the roads of Sarzana, selling antiques.

Marinella
Sarzana is not far from the sea; Marinella is located at the mouth
of the Magra river and is a famous sea resort. The center was
founded at the end of XIX century; it is usually very lively but
also characterised by a relaxed atmosphere. In the last few decades
it has become also known for the neighbouring archaeological site
of Luni.

Falcinello
Falcinello is situated on the top of a hill between Sarzana, Trebiano,
Arcola and Vezzano. The core of the village dates from the X century;
since its origins, the little town gravitated around Sarzana.
Of great interest is the church of San Pabiano and Sebastiano
(XVI century): located inside the castle, it hosts two paintings
from Fiasella's school: the first portrays Saints Paiano and Sebastiano,
while the second represents the Madonna del Rosario with San Domenico
and Santa Caterina.
