  Podenzana and Montedivalli

Gaggio, little village founded by the Longobards (VII-VIII centuries), hosts an important religious sanctuary, the Santuario della Madonna del Gaggio. Tradition says that Holy Mary appeared here, on a chestnut-tree; since then, the sanctuary has always been an important pilgrimage center. In old times, the number of pilgrims became so large that the bishop had to move the chestnut into a big shrine, to prevent the pilgrims from taking pieces of its bark and destroy the tree. Podenzana, on the other hand, is an excellent place for hikers, who can enjoy its thick forest and the beautiful view from the top of the surrounding hills.

Montedivalli
Montedivalli is composed by a series of little villages on the watershed between the Magra and the Vara rivers. One of Montedivalli's most interesting buildings is the Pieve di Sant'Andrea di Castello, a church built around X century by the powerful bishop of Luni, whose dominions extended over this area. The original, early-medieval structure can be guessed from a series of elements, still visible in spite of late Romanesque modifications. The building is entirely in stone (mainly sandstone) with a slanted roof that must look just like the original one.
