Mulazzo
and around |
|
| |
Mulazzo
is situated in the northern part of Val di Magra along the Mangiona
stream which carved a thin valley into the green surrounding hills.
Here it is possible to spend a relaxing holiday in an intact countryside.
This area is ideal both for long hikes and short walks, while
the gastronomical specialities can satisfy any food connoisseur.

Mulazzo's
cuisine is excellent: as the Val di Magra has a very good food
tradition, nd Mulazzo is probably its capital. The secrets of
good eating are passed down from generation to generation; every
year the prize BancarelVino is awarded to the best wine of the
region while the Mengoli prize is dedicated to the best publishing
opera on gastronomy. This area is also interesting from a cultural
point of view: Mulazzo, for example, is one of the best examples
of fortified town in Lunigiana.

Absolutely
essential are a visit to the castle, to the Malaspina aqueduct,
to the remains of the Byzantine tower and to the church of San
Martino. In the neighbourhood there are also many other centres
worth a visit. Monteriggio is one of them: small village in the
middle of a chestnut forest, it features a Malaspina palace and
a XIX century church (Sant'Apollinare). Next to it, on the hill
Carbone, there are the sanctuary of Madonna del Monte and a series
of interesting old stone houses.

Of
some interest is also the Groppoli castle, with a square tower
form the so called obertengo period (X-XI century). A few kilometres
away, the village Bastevoli features an ancient church, a Malaspina
stronghold from XVI century and a beautiful view.
