Fosdinovo
and Caniparola |
|
| |
Fosdinovo
is the main venue of this area; the Malaspina castle, perfectly
preserved in its original shape, is one of the best examples of
military building from the XIV century and it dominates the valley
with its sheer walls. Noteworthy is also the "Oratorio dei
Bianchi", built entirely in marble coming from the nearby
Apuane.

Next
to it there is the church of San Remigio, founded over a big abbey
that was once a marvel to the travellers coming to Fosdinovo.
In the church is conserved Galeotto Malaspina's funerary monument,
realised by some unknown, excellent Lombard sculptor.

Caniparola
Caniparola is situated a few kilometres from Fosdinovo, at the
foot of a hill. Hidden but not far from the via Aurelia is the
magnificent villa Malaspina, rebuilt in XVIII century by marquis
Gabriele Malaspina.

This
building, also called Il Castello (The Castle) in memory of the
warlike glory of Malaspina family, is typically Italian in its
architecture and in its garden. Unfortunately the villa is not
open to the public but on special occasions; it contains some
frescoes by Antonio Contestabile.
