Fivizzano |
|
| |
Fivizzano
is located in a privileged position, in a green valley among the
white Alpi Apuane. Fivizzano has always been an important trade
and communication channel and is also rich in agriculture. Fivizzano's
wealth is evident from its great number of palaces and important
historical buildings: besides many churches (among which the Chiesa
dei Santi Jacopo e Antonio), Fivizzano has a beautiful oratory (l'Oratorio
di San Carlo) and many museums. Additionally, not far from Fivizzano
there are many small interesting centres.

Verrucola
dei bosi
Verrucola dei Bosi lies at the gates of Fivizzano; it is one of
the most intact fortified towns of Lunigiana, and its past glory
depended on Fivizzano's fortunes. Verrucola's stone buildings were
built in medieval times, and are often decorated by beautiful sandstone
doorways. The fortress, on the other hand, is surrounded by vegetation
and dominates the valley crossed by the Mommio stream and by the
Collegnano canal.

Verrucola's
castle was repeatedly modified; its present state dates from XVI
century, when the marquis Spinetta Malaspina added to an early building
a wider outside wall and some reinforcing towers. A little church
devoted to Santa Margherita is perfectly integrated in the castle;
it is very ancient and features a typically Romanesque plan, like
many other churches of the Lunigiana.

Equi
Terme
Equi is a little village at the foot of the impressive peak "Pizzo
d'Uccello". The first settling in this area date from Musterian
period (middle Paleolithic), when the nearby caves were home to
some local tribes. Most of the caves are now open to the public
but some of them still await complete exploration; recently an underground
lake was discovered. Moreover, Equi is a renown thermal spa: hot
waters springing from the Madonna del Bosco Mountain are used in
the treatment of respiratory system, allergic and gynecologic diseases.
