  Bolano, Montebello and Ceparana

Bolano area is characterised by a peaceful countryside. The green hills at the confluence of Magra and Vara rivers convey a feeling of silence and relax. The area is of great interest to those who love history and culture: apart from Bolano itself, rich in little roads and fascinating churches, there is Montebello with its parish, or Ceparana and its imposing fortress.

Montebello
Located in the middle of a quiet area, Montebello is a typical rustic village. This little town is not far from the via Aurelia; for this reason, being next to an important communication line, Montebello was an important center in the past. Its church, the Pieve di Sant'Andrea di Castello, was a reference point for travellers and merchants travelling through Bolano's territory. On the front of the church, a bas-relif with a clergyman reminds the visitor that the curt was property of the bishop of Luni.

Ceparana
Ceparana was probably founded by the Romans, but the first official document speaking about it is from late X century: it is a diploma by Emperor Otto I that acknowledges the importance of the little village as a military and trade center. One of the main buildings of Ceparana is Palazzo Giustiniani, erected where once stood the famous monastery of San Venanzio; in the course of the Middle Ages this monastery acquired great importance, to the point that for a certain period the bishops of Luni preferred it to Bolano as his own see. Later the monastery lost its importance, while the building was enlarged and slowly transformed into a fortress. In XVIII century the building was bought by the Giustiniani family that used it as a palace.
