Villafranca was founded on the left of the Magra river, in the middle of the valley, where the Cisa road crosses the stream Bagnone. The origin of Villafranca dates back from XI century when the village developed around the Cappella di San Niccolò, a little church along the medieval via Romea. Like other villages, Villafranca was an important center because it controlled communications towards the Cisa pass.

Villafranca territory is mainly flat or slightly hilly and is covered with chestnut groves, oaks and ash-trees. Mild climate, a beautiful countryside and a rich history make Villafranca a place for cultural and environmental tourism. Villafranca hosts an ethnographic museum, at the entrance of the town.
