Licciana's territory is located in the higher part of the Val di Magra; it's a long strip of land limited by the Magra, the Apennines and the territories of Aulla, Fivizzano, Comano, Villafranca and Bagnone. The commune of Licciana was born after Italy reunification (second half XIX century) from the merger of series of villages: Terrarossa, Tavernelle, Ripola, Taponecco Varano and Apella.

In old times Licciana was an important trading center: in fact, it is located on the road leading from Aulla to the Tavarone valley, to reach the passes of Lagastrello and Ospedalaccio and thus communicate with the Garfagnana region. Licciana territory is variegated, including flat areas as well as hills. It is crossed by the Tavarone River; quite and peaceful, this is one of the most intact areas in the Val di Magra.
