Bolano is located on a hill in the higher part of the Val di Magra, at the confluence of the rivers Vara and Magra. This area was once crossed by a number of roads important for trade; for this reason Bolano was at the center of a series of wars among the local masters. Luckily, Bolano managed to maintain his independence and enjoyed long periods of peace and prosperity.

Nowadays agriculture is still the main sector for the whole area; as a consequence, the countryside is untouched and is an ideal place for those looking for relax in a green and peaceful spot.
