Bagnone is located on a winding, narrow road carved by the homonymous river. Going to Bagnone, the village appears suddenly, perched on a rock in the middle of a thick wood of pine-trees and oaks. The town always lived in symbiosis with the river as shown by a number of water mills; some of them were still active until few years ago.

In the Middle Ages, but also in more recent times, the town was very important for its strategic position. Located at the crossing of important roads leading to the Apennines and to Lucca, Bolano has always been an important target for the most powerful towns and "signori" (masters) in the region.
