Arcola is situated in the lower part of the Val di Magra, not far from the mouth of the river; it sits on a green hill a few kilometres from the sea. Arcola's most important building is the castle, high on the top of the hill just above the bell tower of the church.

The name's origin, as for many of these villages, is ancient and intriguing: according to some historians, "Arcola" comes from the Latin arx or arcula (stronghold); according to others, the names derives from the dialect "ar co a", which means "on the top of the hill". Other more elaborated hypotheses say that the name comes from Hercules, or from the noble family of the Erculei. In Arcola area there are some fascinating views on the Magra river, on its mouth, on the gulfs of La Spezia and Lerici, and -of course- on the Apuane Mountains.
