The
name's origin, as for many of these villages, is ancient and intriguing:
according to some historians, "Arcola" comes from the
Latin arx or arcula (stronghold); according to others, the names
derives from the dialect "ar co a", which means "on
the top of the hill". Other more elaborated hypotheses say
that the name comes from Hercules, or from the noble family of
the Erculei. In Arcola area there are some fascinating views on
the Magra river, on its mouth, on the gulfs of La Spezia and Lerici,
and -of course- on the Apuane Mountains.
