  Casola

The first traces of human presence in this area date from the Paleolithic. In that period little groups of hunters used to live in Casola's forests, in the vicinity of mountain passes. The first settlings from the Bronze Age were inhabited by tribes of the so called Ligurian stock; they were little villages of wooden and clay huts, and their inhabitants were living on cattle-breeding and agriculture. During the Iron Age these villages grew and agriculture became more extensive.

The famous Statue Stele, mysterious stone statues representing stylized human bodies, come from this period. In the following centuries the area was inhabited more intensively, but the masters that ruled this area didn't leave important traces. Only in the late Middle Ages Casola developed as a little town and, to its misfortune, it attracted the interest of the surrounding towns.
