  Ameglia

Ameglia has a remarkably long history. We surely know that the site was inhabited since prehistory; an important necropolis confirms that the place was important leg for the transumanza, seasonal movement of shepherds between the plains and the mountains. Important centre in the Roman period, Ameglia also had a port on the river. In the early Middle Ages Ameglia reached the apex of its power; it was home to important bishops around 1280. Between XII and XIII centuries the walls and the tower we still see were erected.

After the death of Castruccio Castracani Ameglia was ruled by different masters and local families, among which the Doria, the Visconti, the Campofregoso. Many times sold and bought, Ameglia reaches a period of relative stability in XV century, after the Banco di San Giorgio buys it. At the beginning of XIX century Ameglia is annexed to the Lerici territory, to be then incorporated into the Regno d'Italia in the second half of century.
