After
the Roman domination, the Byzantines ruled Val di Magra,
keeping a particularly tight control over Luni region. The reason
for this interest was Luni's port, ideal base for the Byzantine
fleet which had its main port on Sardinia. Indeed, for a period
the headquarters of the navy were moved to Filattera, and this confirms
the importance of the location to the Byzantines.

In 643
the Longobards entered Val di Magra, making it an extension of the
duchy of Lucca. Starting from the X century Luni hosted a bishop palace,
installed there by Emperor Otto I. At the same time, the oriental
regions of Lunigiana were re-organised into feuds, that had to pay
tribute to the Emperor; it is from these feuds that the families of
Malaspina and Este would eventually emerge, to rule for many years
over the Lunigiana and over vast part of northern Italy. Also, during
the feudal period many small villages in the Valle were founded: Aulla,
Bagnone, Villafranca, Zeri.
