  Roman age

Ligurian and Apuan populations that once inhabited the Val di Magra fell under the Roman domination in the course of the II century b. C. In 180 b.C. a great number of locals were deported in the Sannio area, but not much later the newly founded town of Luni (built in 177 b.C.) was looted by rebellious local populations.

As the Roman dominion became more stable, a number of infrastructure works reshaped the landscape: a new via Emilia Scauri, extension of the via Aurelia (which passed though Pisa), allowed for efficient transportation through the Lunigiana, in direction north towards the region called Emilia. Roman remains are still visible in Filattiera di Sorano and especially in and around Luni.
