Malaspina
Castle of Fosdinovo
In
XIV century Spinetta made Fosdinovo a real town: its castle, which
still bears the name of the powerful family, was enlarged and restructured
according to high military standards. Organised on a square plant,
this stronghold features a central courtyard and cylindrical towers
at the corners, which used to be linked by a long gangway; we strongly
recommend a visit to it. The castle is open to the public and its
rooms clearly shows the changes undergone throughout the centuries:
during the Malaspina dominion the castle was rebuilt with strictly
military purposes; then, it was modified according to more estethic
criteria: the drawbridge was eliminated, new yards were built and
the rooms embellished. The most famous room in the castle was believed
to have hosted Dante. In fact, the poet spent some time with the
Malaspinas and had an essential role in signing a peace treaty between
these latter and the count-bishop of Luni. In the so-called "Dante's
room" it is possible to admire the castle's oldest fresco.
