Verrucola
Fortress of Fivizzano
Verrucola
dei Bosi lies at the gates of Fivizzano; it is one of the most intact
fortified towns of Lunigiana, and its past glory depended on Fivizzano's
fortunes. Verrucola's stone buildings were built in medieval times,
and are often decorated by beautiful sandstone doorways. The fortress,
on the other hand, is surrounded by vegetation and dominates the
valley crossed by the Mommio stream and by the Collegnano canal.
Verrucola's
castle was repeatedly modified; its present state dates from XVI
century, when the marquis Spinetta Malaspina added to an early building
a wider outside wall and some reinforcing towers. A little church
devoted to Santa Margherita is perfectly integrated in the castle;
it is very ancient and features a typically Romanesque plan, like
many other churches of the Lunigiana.
Motorway A15 exit - Aulla.
