Castle
of "Vescovi"
Between
1187 and 1203 , according to Pelavicino codex (a chronicle reporting
on the events in the Valle), Bishop Gualtiero erected this castle.
Gualtiero intended to control a segment of the via Romea, important
communication line towards north. The castle was then enlarged by
Enrico da Fucecchio, interested in protecting further this area
and its villas.
Part of the walls and the 80-meter tower (called Turris Magna, i.e.
Big Tower) still stand over the valley; in 1873 these remains of
the castle were declared historical monument and carefully restored.
