Vezzano
Ligure and its churches |
|
| |
The
first significant residential nucleus rose at Vezzano
around the 10th century. Dry walls surrounded the defensive
stronghold which included the castle and the round tower. Two
centuries later, for defence purposes, a pentagonal tower was
added outside the town's perimeter wall. It was connected to
the castle by a bridge. Today only a few ruins of the castle
remain but the tower is still in good conditions, though it
may not be visited for it has no entrances above ground level.

Numerous
churches remain as well-preserved testimonies of the past.
Among these, the church of Nostra Signora del Soccorso remembers
its flourishing renaissance period with its marbles, sculptures
and wall-painting. It also hosts masterpieces of the later
centuries such as canvases and wall-paintings which date
back to the 18th century. Also noteworthy is the church
of S. Maria Assunta in Cielo situated in the lower part
of the town.

Probably
built around the 12th century, it underwent many restorations
during the centuries which extended and beautified the
suggestive construction. Worth a visit is the parish
of San Sebastiano which dates back to the 17th century.
This parish is constructed on a previously existent
medieval layout. The inside, developed using three colonnades,
holds precious wooden masterpieces from the 16th and
18th century which depict the Madonna between S. Francesco
and S. Giovanni Evangelista and the Assunzione.
