Artistic and cultural wealth of Val di Magra

The Magra Valley may be compared to an orchestra. All the cultural instruments have a distinct personality, but their sounds united create a splendid melody. Infact the valley, although divided into two separate regions, maintains its municipal values together with those that involve the entire valley. The castles, for example, represent an important unifying element for the entire valley. This territory is known as the "Land of 100 castles".

In all the town centers one may visit these monuments which continue to preserve antique furniture and often host famous museums and interesting cultural events. Some of the most important of these is the 14th century Fortress of Sarzana, the Brunella of Aulla, the strongholds and millenary historical centers of Arcola and Trebbiano. Unforgettable are also the Byzantine hamlet of Filetto and the surprising center of Ortonovo with its elliptical lay-out.

As on the entire Italian territory, the number of churches of artistic importance is enormous; from the Romanesque to Baroque-style architecture all holding a number of masterpieces of great historical importance. The cathedral of Sarzana, for example, is a must to visit for it holds several paintings of Flasella and the relic of the Preziosissimo Sangue. Do not forget a visit to the church of Santa Maria Maddalena at Castelnuovo Magra with her wall-paintings by Flasella and the famous Crocifissione of the young Brughel.

Santo Stefano Magra has a concentric lay-out and holds six Genovese style baroque chapels with stucco decorations and very prestigious interiors. Many museums are found in this land so rich of culture and traditions. The most characteristic is that of the Pignaro castle at Pontremoli which hosts the well-preserved stone statues of Lunigiana, once antique symbol of the Magra Valley.

Passing through Ortonovo, one must stop to visit the museum of Luni excavations, antique stronghold of the area during the Roman era. Here you may admire the ruins of the amphiteatre, public buildings, a temple and various mosaics of that time. There are many museums based on the antique local culture as the museum of the Casola territory and the ethnographic museum of the Lunigiana which is situated near Villafranca.
