Tresana
and the castle ruins |
|
| |
The
residential area of Tresana is situated on a hill and
overcome by the ruins of an ancient complex of castle relics
which majestically dominate the small hamlet below. Most likely
founded during the Longobard era, the castle was given by Federico
Barbarossa to Obizzano Malaspina of Mulazzo in 1164. Kept in
poor conditions up to the past century, the castle has a parallelepiped
layout and is overlooked by the quadrangular tower still perfectly
intact. It was given the name of "owner's residence"
although it preserved several privileges such as the rights
of the first-born male. This was done to prevent the dispersion
of the property. Another privilege maintained was that of minting
coins, which in the area was exclusively reserved to the Massa
and Fosdinovo feuds.

At
Villa di Tresana there is another well-preserved
castle thanks to the various restorations completed during
the past years. This small construction looks like a miniature
castle and is surrounded by a small garden which overlooks
beautiful views of the valley. The castle's structure is
very simple and has a solid aspect with a quadrangular layout
and two cylindrical towers positioned at opposite corners.
The perimeter-wall is completely constructed in stone with
a slight external scarp underneath a continuous stone trimming
and a series of different size openings. These are also
seen on the tower, signs of the past alterations of the
original structure.

In
the far feudal past of the Lunigiana, the Villa castle
and its territory was part of a vast Malaspina marquisate.
Another important monument to visit is the church of
San Siro, constructed in baroque stile and divided into
three colonnades. Inside the church you may find the
altar in white marble dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario
and the mortal remains of Lieutenant Thomas Nugent of
the Imperial Army. The Giovagallo castle is reached
following a path near Agneda, but is unfortunately in
ruins covered by the deep vegetation.
