Mulazzo |

Mulazzo's
center is still perfectly preserved and witnesses a past rich
in history. The strategic position of the village attracted
the interest of the Byzantines, who used the place to control
the formidable Longobards coming from north. These latter eventually
conquered the town but then, for political reasons, preferred
to donate it to the marquis Obizzo Malaspina.

The
power of the Malaspina family was particularly strong on
this area. At the beginning of XIV century Franceschino
Malaspina was patronising a number of artists and intellectuals;
among them the famous Dante Alighieri. The poet,
who was also an important personality in politics, spent
a long period in Mulazzo, mediating the peace between the
Malaspina and the bishop of Luni. At the same time, when
he was in Mulazzo, he wrote part of his Commedia.

fLater
Mulazzo was under the rule of the French, who ensured
political stability but were unable to develop the area
economically. After the Vienna Congress a period of
relative instability followed, as some parties in the
area of Mulazzo were faithful to the Regno di Sardegna,
while others tried to maintain some independence. Later,
as the Regno di Sardegna strengthened its authority
and then became "Regno d'Italia", the situation
regularised.
