Licciana

Licciana
Nardi as we see it today developed between XI and XIII centuries.
This village stretches along a main road featuring some important
buildings with sandstone doorways. The oldest and most important
building is the castle of the Malaspina family, undisputed masters
of this area between the XIII and XVIII centuries. Little is
left of the old stronghold, because in the course of XVI century
it was transformed into a palace to become an elegant building.

This
building is located on Licciana's mains square along with
the San Giacomo church; palace and church used to be linked
by a bridge, whose remains are now visible near the town's
doors. The parish dates from the XVIII century and it has
a triptych with Jesus and the Virgin. In the main square
a monument is dedicated to Anacarsi Nardi, hero of the movement
for reunification of Italy in XIX century; he fought along
with Ciro Menotti and then with the Bandiera brothers, to
die with these latter.

In
memory to Anacarsi's feats, Licciana added the hero's
name to its own. Not far from the town, on the other
side of the river, lies the "Piano castle",
fundamental in controlling the southeast Tavarone valley.
