Filattiera
and the Malaspina castle |
|
| |
Filattiera
is made up of a number of nice quarters situated on a hill on
the left side of the Magra. It features a Malaspina castle,
right on the town's central square. In Roman and Byzantine times
Filattiera was the most important centres of the valle after
Luni. Inside the San Giorgio church there is the tombstone of
Leodegar, a local bishop who died in 752 after having fought
the last heathen rites in this area. This marble tombstone was
originally kept in the Pieve di S. Stefano in Sorano. The tower
on the farthest end of the hill had an entrance three meters
above the ground for safety reasons.

Filattera's
most important building is the Pieve di Santo Stefano in
Sorano. This church is located in the lower part of the
valley, at the junction between three historical roads:
one from prehistoric times, another from Roman times (the
"via Aemilia-Scauri") and a third from Medieval
times (the "via Francigena"). The Pieve hosts
a pre-Christian idol, while recent restoration works have
brought back to the light traces of medieval frescoes and
some stone stelae.
