Castelnuovo
Magra its history, its art |
|
| |
Located
on the Monte Bastione in a strategic position to control the
lower Magra valley, Castelnuovo Magra is a very ancient
town. On arrival, the visitor is welcome by the white marble
face of the Oratorio dei Bianchi, Renaissance building erected
around 1500. A few hundreds meters away there is the Santa Maddalena
church; founded in late Renaissance period this church hosts
important pieces of art; among them some marble statues from
Carrara and ancient some bas-relifs.

The
Town Hall square is dominated by the remains of the count-bishops'
ancient castle. Part of the walls and the 80-meter tower
(called Turris Magna, i.e. Big Tower) still stand over the
valley; in 1873 these remains of the castle were declared
historical monument and carefully restored. Many "Maestà",
white marble bas-relifs with religious scenes used to decorate
the houses, are also interesting. Noteworthy are then palazzo
Ingolotti Cornelio, palazzo Tonarelli and palazzo Ferrari-Natolini.
