Arcola
and its pentagonal tower |
|
| |
The
hamlet of Arcola, antique Roman keep and passage station
during the empire's advance against the Ligurian population,
has undergone several denominations which have influenced significantly
the local culture. The town is situated on a small hill from
which overcomes the Pentagonal Tower most likely constructed
around the 10th century by the Obertenghi Counts of Luni. Around
this construction the houses are developed using a typical medieval
layout of concentric circles.

Also
interesting to see is the San Nicolo' church which dates
back to the 16th century and has been restored several times
in the later century. It holds three aisles with columns
of Etruscan origins. Not far from the church, the Nostra
Signora degli Angeli Sanctuary, constructed around the mid-15th
century, holds three aisles with columns of Ionic origins.
Inside you may admire the Podenzana painting, situated above
the altar and various accessories and furniture dating back
to the 16th century.
