Ameglia
and its millenary castle |
|
| |
The
centuries-old history of Ameglia and the various influences
have left many traces in the local culture. From above the hill
the town dominates the valley below and its urbanistic layout
is typical of hilltop strongholds. Its small and narrow streets
which meet forming a spiderweb-like shape, are lined with tiny
houses which seem to be piled one above the other. The outer-walls
still hold well preserved crenellations and brackets and a part
of the antique pass which lead to the tower.

The
medieval castle and the circular tower are still in very
good conditions. The castle, which today hosts the town's
municipality and therefore opened to the public, has a rectangular
layout and its general construction characteristics remember
roman structures. From here you have a wonderful view of
the Magra river's delta and the castle is also home to various
wall-paintings dating back to the 18th century, masterpieces
of the painter "wearing the long mantel".

The
tower rises in several levels and in the past centuries
was used as a prison. Worth a visit is the suggestive
exterior court, surrounded by boundary walls which follow
the sloping of the ground. Especially during the summer
months, this area is used for theatrical and cultural
events.
